Proposal / Soft Clocks ↴
Soft Clocks are an open-source, collaborative, and customizable collection of healthy routines and cycles designed to keep the whole of society mindful, present, and connected within their respective stage of mental health balance, available in various forms to fit each person’s needs and abilities, including software, print, and household objects, inspired by human memories of tactile materials, light, and sound; all hosted on Are.na.

Soft Clocks give form to the cyclical nature of mental health, from the smallest time cycle to the largest, different for everyone; breaking us out of from “cycle amnesia.” Everyone from mental health specialists, to the community at large, can recommend routines and cycles to share.

Soft Clock, Type 1 (Tactile) ↴
A tactile clock, made of materials sourced from our most personal memories. Only we know what maps to a particular task, feeling, emotion. Remove the anxiety of the clock, and replace it with one that is comforting, familiar, shared.

Soft Clock, Type 2 (Sound) ↴
Auditory soft clocks remind us of stages in cycles and routines through sound alone. We tune in when we are ready, like a radio.

Details from SPACE10 + Are.na
SPACE10 and Are.na are launching a one-month remote residency supporting five residents to formulate a response to the complexity of living in the time of COVID-19. The focus of the residency is primarily on mental health and wellness within the confines of the home. Residents will use the UN Policy Brief: COVID-19 and the Need for Action on Mental Health as a starting point to develop their ideas.

The core of the residency will be weekly digital sessions with SPACE10, Are.na and a mental health specialist from It’s Complicated, and ongoing shared research hosted on Are.na.

Residents will be asked to contribute to the shared body of research, as well as producing the final individual and creative output (e.g. a graphical statement, essay, music piece, illustration, film, prototype, garment, sculpture, poem, etc.).

A full case study is in the works and will be mirrored on Are.na.
