Architectural design of an incremental network of community gardens, town squares, and similar new publics that grow below, above, and around increasingly gentrified and commercial interests, as a reclamation of Washington Heights by and for its residents; with Studio Dixit at Columbia GSAPP.

'New Commons' is a modular system that aims to serve, respond to, and represent the neighborhood's evolving transnational identity and needs through a shared architecture that fosters agency, access, ownership, and overall wellbeing for residents of all ages, abilities, and socioeconomic standing.

This project proposes a reclamation of Washington Heights by and for its residents, creating an incremental network of community gardens, town squares, and similar new publics that grow below, above, and around increasingly gentrified and commercial forces that do not act in the community's interests.

This project starts with the augmentation of an existing town square to reach a critical mass that affords tighter community interaction, leadership, and programming radiating outwards and connecting future, similar spaces in the neighborhood through a common, shared architectural language.

Aware of the inevitable bias deeply rooted in architectural design's history, this project proposes an intentionally incomplete architecture, drawing new iterations and additions through direct use and participation from the community; an architecture that changes with time, specific use, and increasingly unpredictable environmental conditions. New Commons propose an incremental kit of parts, site-specific by its impermanence, inviting incremental improvements as community needs, fundraising, advocacy, and city policy change over time.
